Remarkable book -- history, drama, comedy It is fascinating to read, both for the political and social history and for the dialog. Nov 14, Alice Paterra rated it really liked it Shelves: beautiful-reads. Everyone on Delmarva should read this book.
It's about who we are and where we came from. I did not know about Patty Cannon before reading this and the danger for free blacks in the border states of being kidnapped and sold into slavery.
It was a thriving business. Those were certainly terrible times, no good old days for sure. Jul 21, Jennifer Nesbitt rated it really liked it. One of the weirdest dang books I have ever read! The spine of this book with its creepy golden silhouette haunted my childhood from its perch on the family book shelves! This is the fictionalized tale of Martha "Patty" Cannon circa , the leader of a gang in the early 19th century that kidnapped slaves and free blacks from the Delmarva Peninsula and transported and sold them to plantation owners located further south.
Used - Hardcover Condition: Fine. Condition: Fine. Originally published in , romance involving a number of very questsionable enterprises including selling free blacks into slavery, true story. Book has previous owner's name on fly leaf, pages unmarked, map endpapers, corners slightly bumped, slight wear to the corners and spine ends. A nice, clean, tight and attractive book.
Published by Tidewater Publishers, Cambridge, Maryland, Illustrated Edition. Published by Forgotten Books, Print on Demand. Better known as a journalist and correspondent during the American Civil War, George Alfred Townsend was also an author of fiction.
This novel provides readers with an account of the life and crimes of Martha "Patty" Cannon. The gang that she led was responsible for the kidnapping and sale of slaves and free blacks from the area to plantation owners in the South. Told from the perspective of a newsman decades after the crimes were committed, the story is a semi-fictionalized account of Cannon's crimes and the racial prejudice that made them possible.
It is a tragic story of the failure of humanity that includes a romantic storyline. While the historical accuracy of Townsend's book is unproven, it remains one of the most detailed accounts of this period in history. Townsend was a gifted writer, and the author brings his experience as a war correspondent to this book. While presented as a novel, the book is ripe with factual details.
Townsend builds an engaging romance story to further the narrative, but remains always focused on the terrible actions of Patty Cannon and her gang of criminals.
As both a fictionalized story of romance and an account of a dark period in history, The Entailed Hat, or Patty Cannon's Times is a fascinating read. The historical significance of the subject matter makes Townsend's novel affecting in a way few novels are and readers interested in a novel rooted in truth will find this to be a highly engrossing book.
