We found it quite a neat alternative to the regimented ways of the iPad and bloatware-heavy screens of some rival Android tablets. If you want to access the more PC-esque aspects of the tablet, you can tap on the relevant tiles, for Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Even for experienced tablet users, it can take a little while to get to grips with some of the nuances of the Surface. Microsoft has ensured that swiping form every side of the device can trigger a response: swipe from the left edge and you cycle through any apps and programmes you have open.
You can also multitask, and access two apps running side by side. Swiping up from the top and down from the bottom reveals an icon which give you access to all the apps on the Surface. The Surface responds reasonably quickly, but can feel a little sluggish when your fingers are firing on all cylinders. We also found the Internet Explorer web browser slightly slower to load pages, with its rivals regularly pipping it to the post.
Another aspect of the Surface RT which requires more getting used to is the pressure-sensitive Touch Cover which comes as part of the package. The keys are a little cramped and are only ever so slightly raised, which means your fingers can take a little while to adjust. Microsoft has the option of a black Type Cover below , which is of a similar size, but more like a normal keyboard. Obviously with no understanding of the underlying source and architecture it's all pure speculation but I'm just trying to raise awarness that things may not be a simple re-compile.
Oh, and given the multiple controller's on multiple OS's and architectures, my money's on it being OpenGL!! I was planning on buying more Sonos equipment but it's currently on hold until I see some movement on at least one of these. I'm starting to think about looking to see if there are sensible 'neat' alternatives to Sonos. This request is sent from my surface. But i need to go to my laptop or ipad to instrument sonos?? Come on. Apple and android arent the only platforms.
It is time for you guys to start developping a Windows RT application for Sonos because the Surface wave is coming. What's the tipping point for getting this going? I've never see the iOS app not an Apple fan , but their Windows and Android implementations are superb. It takes time to write software of that quality. Like all the posters on this topic I anxiously await an RT app to run on my new Surface.
Based on the envious looks from friends and colleagues I suspect it is the next big thing. I need this app too. I used to have a Windows phone, and used the Phonos app. But it's not very good, so I moved to Android, just to get a better controller.
