Irish-American medical student Kerry O'Shea Don Murray hopes to stay aloof, but saving a wounded friend gets him outlawed, and inexorably drawn into the rebel organization under his former professor Dr.
Sean Lenihan James Cagney , who has "shaken hands with the devil" and begun to think of fighting as an end in itself. Complications arise when Kerry falls for a beautiful English hostage, and the British offer a peace treaty that is not enough to satisfy Lenihan. Parental Guide. This is one of the very best films from the tail end of Cagney's career.
Unlike so many of his previous films, this movie was entertaining AND had something profound to say as well. Instead of being happy with the gains the Irish made, Cagney's character has been fighting so long he's lost track of WHY and is simply hellbent on murder and killing for its own sake. When other members begin calling for restraint, Cagney wants to escalate the killings until eventually he becomes a liability to the organization.
While some times Cagney tended to "chew the scenery" at the expense of the film i. An excellent and timeless story.
But the other theme about war, especially endless civil war, is timeless and very relevant for today and not just in Ireland. The setting is and the Rebellion is in full swing. One of his students, an Irish-American played by Don Murray, gets innocently caught up in the Rebellion and chooses to join the IRA after being captured by the special British unit, nicknamed the Black and Tans who are not terribly squeamish in their methods.

It's incredibly frustrating as any working person will know and experience, how as dutiful employees, you have to follow the chain of command even though it runs against what you know from the ground, and probably against solid common sense.
And this is definitely made worse in a uniformed organization, where it's an innate expectation that troops have to listen to orders, lest they be punished and court marshalled. A career solider, Canadian Dallaire had ambitions that he and his UN peacekeeping troops will have their work cut out at maintaining the peace between the fragile government in Rwanda and the rebels up north in the country, a truce most difficult to police given limited resources from supplies and manpower to ensure that duty is done.
As expected, credible intelligence get turned away from the suits occupying the ivory tower in New York, and not before long, civil war is at their doorsteps with the crash of an aeroplane in Rwanda carrying the President as well as important members of the government machinery. And in breakneck speed, the opportunity for lawlessness erupts, and a crisis is at hand. Rules of engagement get passed down, and to the Rwandan militia, it is clear that so long as they do not engage the UN troops, they can practically do what they want.
So how does one negotiate with barbarians who only understand rules if at the other end of a gun barrel, and not the rule of law? Through out the course of history humans have always been fascinated with the concept of being better than the other person or to rule other people.
A lust that everybody hungers for and what better way to do this through building empires and colonies. Belgium did just that on the continent of Africa in the country of Rwanda. Falling under there rule for more than half a century, Belgium decided to make the executive decision pull out of the country and leave it up to its own devices. When they left the nation it was torn between two different parties the Tutsi and the Hutu. The Hutu were outraged at this which only made a already frail relationship fall to pieces.
The Belgium had left the stepping stones for what would be known as Rwanda Genocide. Years after most of the first world nations still aren't terrible concerned about what they do as long as it benefits them in the best way just like Donald Trump.
The Rwanda genocide was a tragic event. Its crazy to think how people can become so corrupted and kill people of all ages. Dallaire is a good man that tried to help but it became too dangerous for his crew and himself.
This was a great documentary to watch and learn about. The fact that these brutal killings were happening everyday would be a terrifying place to try and live in, not being able to sleep at night because you don't know if the next day you'll be slaughtered on the side of the road.
It was definitely a sad topic and unfortunate that this genocide happened. I believe that what happened in Rwanda was tragic because there were so many opportunities to prevent the genocide before it even started. I believe that the turning point that made the genocide start was the killing of the president in the plane crash, i think that this could have been avoided and approached differently.
The Tutsi rebel group got slaughtered by the Hutu group. In my opinion this could've been avoided in many ways such as the assassination of the president, the handing out of weapons and other people egging them on to do it. Erik E. I think that this is a depressing event, and the fact that it could have been prevented makes it worse.
The brutal slaughter of nearly one million people is scary to think about and is devastating. Although Dallaire couldn't stop it, the efforts made by him were incredible. This incident was absolutely horrific and devastating. The things he saw and experienced is more than then any of us will in our entire lives. And to think that this happened not too long ago and that it could happen again somewhere else is scary.
There are people out there that will attempt something like this again and there might not be anything we can do about it. The Rwanda genocide was a horrific thing to happen and it is too bad that nobody stopped it before it was too late.
